The BlutFrau, or Blood Woman, according to Germanic folktales, is a female blood demon that lurked in the woods of the medieval Black Forest, Germany. Earliest tellings are traced to the late 12thcentury in the area surrounding Baden-Baden.  The BlutFrau is typically depicted as having long blond hair, being over seven feet tall, and breathing fire while bleeding from her mouth and eyes.

Legend

The BlutFrau is a territorial monster said to be in covenant with the Devil. Legend claims that she would attack unwitting Christians who wondered into her parts of the woods, but welcome those who pledged their souls to Satan. Some classify the BlutFrau as a Succibi, but in most tales there is no sexual contact between her and her victims. Tales of the BlutFrau were spread by lower clergy and may have contributed to the rise in witch hunts in the area during the 12thand 13thcenturies.  The most famous account of the BlutFrau comes from Eberhard, The Priory of St. Ulrich who claimed to have been on pilgrimage when he came across the BlutFrau breathing fire on a farmhouse, standing as tall as the building itself. In some stories the BlutFrau is accompanied by a pack of wolves.

IN POPULAR CULTURE

The BlutFrau appeared in an episode of the 1954 German Public Radio show Der Horror.

1990s regional shock rock/black metal band BlutFrau named themselves after the creature and had images of her emblazoned on their tapes and other merchandise.
